The Evolving Role of Business Analysts in the Age of AI

Introduction

The role of the Business Analyst (BA) has undergone a profound transformation over time, evolving from a purely technical, requirement-gathering function in the 1970s to becoming a strategic, AI-driven enabler by 2025. Today’s BAs are no longer limited to understanding technology; they must address ethical considerations, optimize processes with AI, and align solutions with long-term business strategies.

AI and the Role of Business Analysts

Contrary to common fears, roles are not eliminated by the rise of AI—they are enhanced. The role of a BA is a perfect example of this transformation. The way we perform daily activities as BAs has shifted significantly. Reflecting on my own work, I realize how much things have changed.

Take requirements gathering, for example—one of the core responsibilities of a BA. This used to involve reading through numerous documents, holding extensive requirements-gathering sessions, and striving to fully understand the customer’s needs. Today, AI tools simplify and enhance this process. Meeting notes are now summarized automatically by AI, allowing me to focus on capturing key insights. When designing processes, I use AI to analyze meeting transcripts and generate process steps in compliance with BPMN standards. I then refine and review these models.

AI also assists in creating presentations and modeling diagrams, while long and complex documents can be summarized by AI to extract key points relevant to my objectives. This efficiency enables me to focus more on strategy and creativity.

How AI is Changing the Nature of Business Analysis

The way we analyze requirements and design solutions in the age of AI is fundamentally different. Here are some of the key changes:

  1. Broad Knowledge of AI Applications
A BA must now possess a deep understanding of AI’s capabilities and be able to propose solutions that leverage AI to address business needs. In many cases, businesses are unaware of how AI can help them, and it falls to the BA to bridge this gap.
  2. Staying Ahead of the Curve
AI tools and solutions often advance faster than businesses can adapt. Tools like Copilot and others are being developed and licensed by organizations, but many struggle to utilize them effectively or understand their full potential. BAs play a crucial role in guiding businesses to make the most of these technologies.
  3. Data Security and Governance
Issues of data security and governance are no longer secondary concerns—they are fundamental to any AI-driven solution. Just like performance and scalability, data security must now be treated as a primary consideration in every AI implementation.
